Reinterpreting Channapatna: Modernity Meets Heritage at Shiv Sagar
At Shiv Sagar, the lighting design serves as a bridge between regional craft legacy and contemporary digital fabrication. The core concept reinterprets Karnataka’s celebrated Channapatna art form—traditionally known for its lathe-turned wood, soft geometric stacking, and glossy lacquer finishes—translating iconic toy-making motifs into functional, large-scale architectural lighting.
Rather than simply replicating traditional forms, the design merges age-old artisanal woodwork with additive manufacturing (3D printing). The structural spines, wall sconces, and turned finials feature hand-lathed wooden components finished in classic lacquer tones—deep indigo, crimson, and exposed natural grain—paying homage to the tactile qualities of local craftsmanship. Paired with these wooden elements are custom 3D-printed diffusers.

Integrating 3D printing into the fixture bodies unlocked new structural possibilities. Traditional hand-carving or blown glass often introduces weight constraints and material limits; precision 3D printing allowed for lightweight, complex, and seamless geometric shades. These printed diffusers emit a warm, uniform glow, softening the surrounding space while accentuating the crisp silhouette of the turned-wood spools above and below them.

Suspended beneath the timber grid ceiling and positioned alongside vibrant narrative wall murals, the pendant lamps act as floating spatial anchors. The wall-mounted sconces echo the same stacked geometry, projecting warm ambient light along textured surfaces.
This hybrid fabrication approach creates a dialogue between past and future. By pairing the hand of the artisan with the precision of code and computational craft, the installation honors local heritage while delivering a fresh, forward-looking aesthetic tailored for a modern hospitality environment.
